Vintage fun

We don’t stop playing because we grow old.
we grow old because we stop playing.
~George Bernard Shaw

Kids make us old and give us gray hair long before our time….but grandkids? Wow. Grandchildren will make a person feel like a kid again! I’m sure children would have happier childhoods if parents treated them like more like grandkids. It’s a phenomena you can’t really explain until you experience it.

Army Wife, Peanut and BB came for almost a month in July. A lot of our time was spent having “old school” fun (as Army Wife calls it.) No electronics. No motors. Just trikes, a basketball, Skip Its, a hula hoop, books, board games and other “old-fashioned” toys.

Much of the fun happened in the driveway.

Yes, the one on the right is moi.

This is a Skip It. Army Wife and The Floridian had these when they were younger. As you can tell, it’s 100% kid-powered by swinging it around with one leg and jumping over it with the other. But Army Wife and Nana were able to do it as well without suffering any broken bones. BB accomplished a couple hundred skips at a time.

The highlight for me was digging out the tricycles. A lifetime ago when Entrepreneur and I moved here, we took apart the kid’s old tricycles and stored them in a box. I found the box and we put together the trikes for Peanut. One was her Mama’s and one was…….yep, you guessed it….her Nana’s!!!

What do you mean did it still work? Of course it still worked. What sort of question is that anyway?

They just don’t make stuff like they used to anymore. This piece of American-made vintage fun is only about 50 years old.

Recycled and Re-purposed.

  1. What a perfect way to spend time!
I remember and used to love the Skip-its. Could do that for hours, and I am sure I could not say the same thing now.
Such a perfect (and so true) quote you chose for this wonderful post.
    xo.

P.S. You go girl, with that hula hoop!!! πŸ™‚

  2. How neat that Peanut can now enjoy her Nana’s tricycle! You are so right, they don’t make them like that anymore. I am surprised you were able to expend so much energy in the heat you had this summer – I tend to melt into the closest comfortable chair when it’s hot.

  3. Grandparenting definitely has its perks — lovin’ it! We would be better parents if we had second chances, using our wisdom and 20-20 hindsight. Last week I was trying to show my grandson how to use one of those skip-its. It took a little bit for me to lift off and get it swinging, but I did. πŸ˜‰ So agree with the quote, too!
