Still, Still, Still

My Whisperings is into the Christmas spirit with Quotography! Every week in December, we’ll be selecting a photo and paring it with Christmas song lyrics! Yea!! Since my house is tore up from our recent reno demo efforts, I haven’t done much Christmasfying yet. So, Tanner, the wonder dog, graciously agreed to help me out this week.

Still, Still, Still is an Austrian Christmas carol and lullaby. It appeared for the first time in 1865 and is attributed to G. Götsch. The melody is set to the Salsburg Melody, written around 1819. The words have gone through a few revisions from the original German writing, with the latest version below.

Still, still, still
One can hear the falling snow.
For all is hushed,
The world is sleeping,
Holy Star its vigil keeping.
Still, still, still,
One can hear the falling snow.

Sleep, sleep, sleep,
‘Tis the eve of our Savior’s birth.
The night is peaceful all around you,
Close your eyes,
Let sleep surround you.
Sleep, sleep, sleep
‘Tis the eve of our Savior’s birth.

Dream, dream, dream,
Of the joyous day to come.
While guardian angels without number
Watch you as you sweetly slumber.
Dream, dream, dream,
Of the joyous day to come.
