Autumn is a second spring where every leaf a flower.
~Albert Camus
This quotes is probably the most beloved, universally used phrase among those who luuuvvv Autumn. And with leaves like these, who could argue?
Spring is a wonderful season, full of rebirth and promise. To watch the earth wake up after winter reinforces hope in our souls. The sun’s warmth on our faces is a welcome change as we rush to add much-needed color to our patios and gardens. We feel alive and invigorated. But this season also brings rain and turbulent weather as the earth transitions from cold to warm. And, there’s also an expectation of productivity. Spring cleaning; garden cleaning and planting…all requiring a lot of physical exertion. And let’s not even talk about the exercise needed after the winter weight gain months.
Summer arrives with glorious excuses to be outside, but it soon drives us back into the AC with the sweltering heat and humidity. The earth’s bounty is in full swing and the long days tease us with seemingly endless opportunities. Mature shade trees offer perfect locations for daydreaming. We revel in the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summertime equipped with lemonade, sweet tea and, of course, Mojitos.
Winter reminds us that all good things must come to an end….or at least a temporary rest. We hunker down to bear the cold, dark days, hoping to survive the biting wind and frigid temperatures. The holidays offer a bit of respite, but then January comes with its short, dark days that keep us curled up inside, doors and windows tightly shut. Snow and ice cause treacherous travel and we long for those warmer, barefoot days of summer.
But Autumn! Autumn is the perfect blend of temperatures, sights, sounds and smells. As the greens fade, the underlying vibrancy of red, yellows and oranges emerge. Nature’s paintbrush is splashed across the canvas, giving us more reasons to pay attention to our surroundings. Yet, Autumn is a season of comfort. Summer’s harvest is gathered and tucked away. Apple cider, pumpkin spice and other spicy scents emerge to wake up our sleeping senses. Coziness take over and wraps us in its comforting, woolen arms. Trees and bushes glow with warm, unrivaled color. Autumn’s song reminds us it’s time for the the earth to slow down…but before it settles down for a long winter’s nap, let us enjoy one last sensual hurrah!
