June Photo Challenge: I Get Around

PJ’s prompt for June’s photo challenge was I Get Around. I got around a lot in April and May so was anticipating a quieter June. That didn’t happen so I have a lot of pics from the month. And, because of that, I’m stretching the “five photo” rule with some diptych and triptych entries.

The month started with Twix attending our church’s version on Vacation Bible School…..which is traditional VBS on steroids. It’s four nights from 5:30-8:30pm and includes dinner, elaborate skits, bible studies, crafts and games. This year 780 kids attended. More than 500 volunteers make the week possible. And we volunteers do get around a lot every night! Once my responsibilities with the registration team is finished, I get around a lot following Twix from station to station to capture her experience in photos .

About mid month, Entrepreneur and I took his mom  on a road trip. We started by staying in Memphis at the “The South’s Grand Hotel,” The Peabody. The Peabody Ducks are the feature attraction at the hotel and are five mallard ducks that swim in the lobby fountain from 11am to 5pm. each day. The Duck March occurs daily at 11am when they come down the elevator and walk the red carpet to the fountain; and again at 5pm when they reverse course. According to the hotel website: When off-duty, the ducks live in their Royal Duck Palace on the hotel’s rooftop. The $200,000 structure is made of marble and glass and features its very own fountain with a bronze duck spitting water. It also includes a small house—a replica of the hotel—where the ducks can nest with a soft, grassy “front yard…Raised by a local farmer and a friend of the hotel, each team of Peabody Ducks lives at the hotel for only three months before retiring from their duty and returning to the farm, where they are free to live as wild ducks.”

After the Duck March, we ventured out to Beale Street to hear some Memphis music and eat BBQ at BB King’s Blues Club. The Memphis Jones band was our dinner accompaniment with songs from blues to soul to rock and roll favorites from Elvis, Chuck Berry and other Memphis artists. Memphis Jones is an enjoyable entertainer with a rich knowledge of Memphis and music history.

After Memphis, we trekked to Kentucky to the Ark Encounter. This is a spectacular, full-size replica of Noah’s Ark, built according to the dimensions given in the Bible. The Ark is 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high and made out of wood; construction teams were headed up by area Mennonite foremen skilled in woodworking. We toured three decks filled with world-class exhibits complete with historical and biblical information designed to help experience what Noah’s life may have been like. Spanning 800+ acres, the complex also includes dining options, speaker presentations, concerts, hands-on activities, and a small zoo.

Also this month was a trip to an area lavender farm. The farm is locally owned and has been in operation since 2016. With 17 varieties of lavender covering 1.3 miles of rows, it’s filled with more than 2,400 lavender plants. In addition, there are chickens, a bee apiary and a gift shop that smells absolutely divine. Along with this, there is no shortage of very busy bees, butterflies and dragonflies flitting around the rows.

Those are my five to show where I got around to this month. Please stop by PJ’s the first part of July to see the travels of others.
